It’s still dark outside, the first soft lights of dawn spill through the open windows, with shadows barely visible, the soft rumblings of “the morning” drift through the house. Brewing coffee, warm oatmeal, and a generous mix of rice and almond mike get warmed on the stove as this little boy sits bright eyed in his almost too small chair on top the table. Daddy as quiet as can be moves through his morning routine.
Once full, the spoon is dismissed onto the floor along with the almost done milk cup and the soft echoes of “all done…all done...” ring through the walls. He’s let loose and with a grin runs through the kitchen to the living room squealing “toy…toy…toy”. Honestly, life doesn’t get better than this.
With a full grin on my face, I gladly join him on the floor where “car…vroom vroom…car…vroom vroom” and “ball…ball” are gleefully screamed as we build a race track from the top of the table to the floor and send our little cars crashing into one another under the daybed. We crawl onto the couch and find unconditional entertainment in stuffing the coasters between the cushions and pulling them out from the floor below. We curl up and read “good night beach” and “where the wild things are” over and over, for in the eyes of an 18 month old, the pages hold a new found magic each time they are turned. He knows which pages he likes the best.
As I lay on the floor he finds amusement in standing on my tummy and then without notice dropping his weight into a pile on top of me and laughing that high pitched laugh. He buries his face into my neck and laughs in delight.
I think he knows my name, when someone says “Kaui” he’ll look at me. He is unfazed by my presence in the house and has no problem staying with me or being fished out of his crib when nap time is over. I could not be a happier camper, no matter what is going on, I truly enjoy laying on the floor and spending my time with him. There is something so pure and raw about the innocence of a child. Thank you my darling for sharing your loveable enthusiasm with me! I cannot wait to visit you again…come play with me in Hawaii.
Thanks to mom and dad for letting me play with your adorable little boy…you gotta share him with me now, I’m in love and not going anywhere!
P.S. Meet Griff, my new ukulele buddy. It amazes me what this man can play on the ukulele. An old time flamingo player, he lost the use of most of his fingers in his left hand and switched to ukulele. I have the total use of both my hands, all my fingers, and toes and I still cannot compete with this man. Next time I come Griff, I’ll have a song for you and hopefully you’ll teach me some of you’re tricks. Thank you for spending time with me!
